The Use of Mega-Pixels in Your Digital Camera
Each pixel is a microscopic spec of color and one million
pixels come together to form a single mega pixel. Whether you should be buying
a 4 MP or a 8 MP digital camera could be quite perplexing to decide, but in the
end, it should depend on what size of photo prints do you plan to get. For
example, a 1 or 2 mega pixel camera would do fine if you are planning to use
your photos on the internet alone.
The mega pixel count for your digital camera should also depend on the type of functions that you are going to perform with it. If you are buying your new digital camera for your family, then you may very well find all you need in a 3.2 MP digital camera. The 3.2 MP cameras will allow you to print out good 5 × 8 pictures and decent enough 8 × 10 pictures and that in most cases is all that one requires from a family digital camera.
The pictures from a one mega pixel camera would be able to give you 4 × 6 print outs at best and stretching the print out beyond that size will cause the picture to become distorted and blurred. Similarly, a 2 MP camera will give you slightly more detailed pictures and also print you a larger photo, say of about 5 × 7 at best standards. A picture taken with a 4 mega pixel camera can be printed out with good quality in 8 × 10 prints, but it may not be so sharp if the same picture is printed out in an 11 × 17 print. A 5 mega pixel camera can very well be used for professional purposes as it can give you photographs that look great even on the 11 × 17 size.
The fact is that the more mega pixels you have in your sensor, the bigger can be the print out size. Another fact is that the more mega pixels you have in your camera, the more space each one of your pictures will take up on your memory card and eventually in your computer. It might therefore be a good idea to choose something that is more suited to our needs than just going for the camera with the highest mega pixels.
A camera which is over 5 mega pixels can be used for professional photography, if it has the proper lens to match the mega pixels. Usually, the digital cameras with the higher mega pixels cost quite a but more than cameras of 2 MP or 3 MP, and that is just one more reason why you should check whether or not you will need the full functions of the extra mega pixels that you are giving your money for. Even if you plan on earning some money with your digital camera by doing a bit of freelancing, you should choose something between 4 to 5 mega pixels because that should be enough to serve your purpose. You would only need the 8 MP or 10 MP digital cameras if you are required to print photos of intricate detail in huge proportions.
