Red Eye Problem in Digital Cameras

Red Eye roblem“Red Eye” is a problem that is very common when you are taking photographs using your digital camera, especially when the flash mode is on. “Red eyes” can ruin good photographs if they are not dealt with because usually it is not desired that the subject appears red eyed in the photo. The problem occurs when the open pupil of the subject allows the camera flash to get through and be reflected on the retina. The reflection is recorded in the photographs that make the subject’s eyes seem red or green as in the case of pets sometimes.

To avoid this effect altogether, try shooting in the red eye reduction mode whenever you are planning to use the flash. Most digital cameras come with red eye reduction feature pre-installed. When you are shooting in open daylight however, this feature could be turned safely off. As the red eye effect is the result of the pupil being open, red eye reduction procedures work by closing the pupil by a sudden and smaller flash of light just before the actual flash lights up. As the pupil remains closed, the flash is unable to get to the retina of the eye and so ends the chance of a red eye effect.

Another way with which you can reduce the chances of a red eye effect is by using the flash of your camera cleverly. Try not to use it directly on your subject, rather bounce it off a wall or a background so that the flash does not fall directly on the eyes of the subject.

If however, the damage is done and you are grieving because the photo with the red eye effect was otherwise a beautiful one, then you should use a photo-editor to edit the red eye effect out of your favorite photograph. These are very effective at removing the red eye with the ease of a few drags and clicks of your mouse but, they may not always leave your picture looking as natural as it should. Red eye removal may also not work if your picture is that of an animal or pet. The reason for this dilemma is the fact that the red eye effect turns into the “green eye effect” in case of certain pets and the photo-editors may not be able to remove such an effect.

You can use correction pens to remove the red eye effect from your favorite photographs as well. You can find these pens in all photo shops but know that even these may not leave your photos looking natural even after removing the red eye effect. The pens may help you with the red well enough if you are skillful in removing the effect but if the effect is green, then even the correction pens are of no use actually. It is therefore best to be careful with your flash from the start to avoid any chance of the red eye or “Demon Eye” effect even before you click the picture.
